“What’s the difference between a sativa and an indica?”
“Do I use them at different times?”
“What the hell is a hybrid?!”
Sativas, Hybrids and Indicas — Oh my! These are some of the most commonly asked questions by members who are new to cannabis and aren’t quite clear on what type they need nor when they need it. More often than not, unfamiliarity with cannabis’ subtleties is a major culprit in negative experiences or “bad trips”, causing some individuals to become hesitant or resistant to cannabis use.
To clear the air, let’s do a quick rundown on the differences between cannabis types (AKA taxonomy) and what effects you can expect, with a few dope product recommendations, of course!
Sativa
Effects: Cerebral invigoration, uplifting, euphoric, energizing, boosts creativity, focus and alertness.
Looks: Tall, slim plants with skinny light green leaves. Buds are less dense, have tighter structure and typically have more orange “hairs”.
Best Time to Indulge: In the daytime, in high energy social settings or when you really need to get ish done.
Worst Time to Indulge: Before bed or when you’re trying to relax. If you’re prone to anxiety, especially avoid in stressful environments.
Our Picks
Flower (pictured): Caliva Sour D Lemon Kush
Concentrate/Vape: Pure Vape Lemon Haze Syringe
Edible: Kin Slips Cloud Buster
Hybrid
Effects: Generally balanced, but dependent on if the strain is more sativa or indica dominant. Can expect the dominant’s effects, but not as heavily.
Looks: Mid sized plant. Buds are dependent on the parent strain’s looks, but usually have a fair split on visual qualities.
Best Time to Indulge: Sativa dominant is ideal in the afternoon or in intimate social settings. Indica dominant is best when winding down in the early evening or chilling at home.
Worst Time to Indulge: Since they’re a happy medium between sativa and indica, there really isn’t a wrong time to enjoy these!
Our Picks
Flower (pictured): Legion of Bloom Red Dragon
Concentrate/Vape: Pure Vape Citrus Tsunami Disposable Vape
Edible: Chill Chocolate ‘That’s A Spicy Dark Chocolate’
Indica
Effects: Relaxing, sedative, appetite stimulant, “couch lock”, relieves stress, anxiety and pain.
Looks: Short, wide plants with dark green thick leaves. Buds are typically dense and fluffy with a deep purple hue.
Best Time to Indulge: At night before bed or as needed if you suffer from chronic pain.
Worst Time to Indulge: In the daytime, anytime when your focus is needed or if you’re planning to get anything done. Definitely not ideal for a lunch break toke!
